Programs & Services
Student Support Services (SSS) at the University of Arizona (UA) is a federally funded TRIO Program. It is housed under the department of Undergraduate Initiatives (UI).
The mission of SSS at the University of Arizona is to help students be successful in college. SSS is designed to assist first generation and other qualifying students with their transition to the University. SSS provides services and support throughout each student’s entire academic career.
The primary goal of SSS is to increase college retention and graduation rates of its participants and facilitate the transition from high school to a four-year college or university.
The program helps students manage the demands of college life by providing a support system of caring professionals.
All participants are provided with the following services and support throughout their academic tenure at The University of Arizona.
- Academic & Career Advising provide a support network, career exploration opportunities, and active referrals within the UA community.
- Through Peer Advising, participants receive individualized peer mentoring and support for personal and academic concerns and on University policies and procedures.
- Chi Alpha Epsilon is an honor society that recognizes the academic achievements of students who participate in TRiO.
- The Connections Course is a three-credit course for first year students that explores and critically discusses a variety of topics to help students successfully transition into the UA.
- Graduate School Preparation provides resources and direct assistance to upperclassmen researching graduate schools, completing applications, writing personal statements, and submitting an application to the McNair Scholars program. SSS juniors and select seniors are eligible to visit graduate schools outside of the state of Arizona at no personal expense.
- Grant Aid is a supplemental tuition aid for students who meet grant aid requirements.
- Peer Leadership & Student Development provides mentoring opportunities in the positions of Peer Advisor and Student Coordinator.
- The SSS Colloquia, “Leadership in Student Support Services”,is designed exclusively for project participants. This course promotes career and academic related leadership skills, critical thinking, and civic engagement projects.
