Maximum Educational Results in Two Semesters (MERITS)

Maximum Educational Results in Two Semesters (MERITS) is an incentive program designed to acclimate first-year students to the University of Arizona. By participating in individual meetings with a peer advisor, attending workshops, and participating in various campus activities, students earn points towards consideration for a book scholarship.

ABOUT THE PEER ADVISOR POSITION
MERITS Peer Advisors are generally assigned 10-15 first-year students for the academic year. Peer Advisors exercise independent judgment and decision making, provide one-on-one support sessions and facilitates group workshops. All peer advisors are required to attend the Mandatory Staff Training Retreat: August 15-16, 2008, as well as a weekly staff development meeting (each Thursday from 4:00-5:30 p.m.)

Student Support Services/TRiO

The Student Support Services Program (SSS) at The University of Arizona is a federally funded TRIO Program within the Department of Undergraduate Initiatives. SSS is designed to assist first generation, low-income and/or students with disabilities with their transition to the University. All participants are provided with various services and support throughout their academic tenure at UA.

ABOUT THE PEER ADVISOR POSITION
Peer Advisors are generally assigned 15-20 first-year, 2nd year, or transfer students to meet with biweekly for the academic year. Under limited supervision, Peer Advisors exercise independent judgment and decision making, provide one-on-one support sessions and facilitates group workshops.

Other Positions within SSS/TRiO:
Coffee Clutch Coordinator: Supports and facilitates workshops for non-traditional students (students over the age of 25) or transfer students.
Student Assistant: Assists the professional staff in the successsful administration of the SSS program thourough various projects.
Skills Coach: Provides academic support to select students through individualized and group sessions.

All SSS/TRiO staff are required to attend the Mandatory Staff Training Retreat: August 15-16, 2008, as well as a weekly staff development meeting (each Thursday from 4:00-5:30 p.m.)

New Start Summer Program

The New Start Summer Program was designed for students, by students, and will celebrate its 39th anniversary this summer. It provides a six-week program for incoming college freshmen, including a 3-5 unit course in Math, English, or INDV, a comprehensive orientation to the U of A campus (including fall registration), and a variety of social activities. The expected enrollment for the 2008 New Start Summer Program is 275 participants.

ABOUT PEER ADVISORS & RESIDENT ASSISTANTS
The New Start Summer Program hires15-20 Peer Advisors and 5-8 Resident Assistants annually. Peer Advisors meet with 15 students for 1 hour every day. RA’s live on campus in a University residence hall. General requirements for both positions include:
• Mandatory Staff Training Retreat: May 21-22, 2008
• Training: May 23 - June 6 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
• Work: June 7 through July 18. Some weekend duties included.

ABOUT NEW START TUTORS
Tutors play an essential role in promoting positive perceptions of tutoring among program participants through active partnerships with course instructors in the classroom, development and facilitation of topical workshops, facilitating study groups and staffing the Drop-In Tutoring Center. Tutors are critical members of the instructional staff and are key individuals in the overall goals of the New Start Summer Program. General requirements for the tutor positions include:

• Training: May 27 - June 6
• Work: Sunday, June 8 (Student Welcome)
• June 9 - July 18 (8:30 - 10:30 Mon.-Fri. with additional afternoon drop-in tutoring hours. Some weekend duties included.)

Multicultural Affairs & Student Success

The Front Desk Student Assistant position in MASS involves a variety of receptionist and clerical skills. As the first contact point for most visitors to the Nugent Building, the Student Assistant is responsible for providing excellent customer service and appropriate referrals. In addition to typical clerical support (typing, data entry, filing, and xeroxing), students will be expected to maintain the front desk area and student information areas.
